Some people make more melanin, and the more melanin your body makes, the darker your skin is. The amount of melanin you produce is genetically determined.

When you get a tan, it’s the body making more melanin to protect the skin by deflecting or absorbing the sun’s rays. Melanin can’t fully protect you however, especially if your skin is pale. Once you see your skin starting to tan, it’s already damaged. Because people with darker skin produce more melanin, they don’t tend to experience the aging effect of the sun as much as paler people, and they are less likely to get skin cancer, though they are not completely protected, so everyone needs to protect their skin when they are in the sun.

Ephelides is a Greek word and it’s the medical term for freckle. They are most commonly found on people with light complexions, red hair, and green eyes, and they can be hereditary. Avoiding excessive sun exposure and protecting your skin from the sun will help to reduce the number of freckles that appear.

Lentigines is a Latin word and it’s the medical term for larger pigmented spots which develop where you have suffered sunburn or sun damage. They are darker than the average freckle.
Are freckles harmless?

They are harmless, but sometimes they can be mistaken for more serious skin problems. If you notice any changes in your skin, see your doctor who may refer you to a dermatologist for investigation. If the appearance of your freckles bothers you, you can talk to a specialist about treatment options. There are some other growths that appear on the skin that can be mistaken for freckles.
