cc cream

Everyone wants amazing skin that has a healthy tone and appearance, but for many people, this is not the reality. Whether your skin problem is blemishes, dark spots, or redness, it can really affect how healthy your skin looks.

A major cause of an uneven complexion is hyperpigmentation, This is when the skin makes too much melanin, and then it causes darker patches to form. Hyperpigmentation is usually caused by excessive sun exposure, hormonal changes, acne, or aging of the skin. Uneven skin tone mostly affects the areas of the skin that are exposed, such as the face, hands, neck, legs, and arms.

But thankfully, your skin doesn’t have to suffer, because there’s an answer, in the form of a cc cream. CC stands for color corrector or complexion corrector, and when applied to the skin, it disguises redness and blemishes and even provides anti-aging benefits.

One of the places where CC creams became unbelievably popular was Korea, so it’s only right that we feature 5 of the best CC creams from some of the country’s best cosmetic and beauty companies.

What are CC creams?

CC cream is one of the beauty industry’s new obsessions. CC stands for color correcting or complexion. CC cream is not a face cream and it’s not makeup, but it’s a bit like a primer but with extra skin health boosting benefits. CC creams were developed in Japan, and they are used as a standard part of applying makeup. They cover or correct any imperfections in skin tone before you even apply any makeup. Their consistency is thin and light, and they’re used to brighten the skin, reduce the appearance of dark spots, reduce redness, and plump the skin. CC creams work in the short term to even out skin tone, and in the long-term to protect your skin. Most CC creams contain an SPF to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. If you aren’t afraid to go bare-faced, wear them alone on the skin, or wear them under your foundation if you want to wear makeup.

What’s the difference between a BB cream and a CC cream?

What’s the difference between a BB cream and a CC cream

Both products straddle the line between makeup and skincare. Both have pigment to give your skin some coverage, but they will both look and feel completely natural. Both have been on the market for around 50 years but have only recently become beauty’s biggest buzz. A BB cream means blemish balm or blemish base and is a combination of a moisturizer, foundation ,and sunblock whereas a CC cream is a color corrector. BB creams tend to be oilier and better for dry skin but have less coverage. CC creams can even out skin tones and have light to medium coverage. They target hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, blotchiness, and can help long term in reducing spots. CC creams are more nourishing with ingredients like macadamia oil and green tea extracts. They have more age defying qualities but do not give full coverage or as much coverage as BB creams. Many people will use a BB or CC cream as a primer and then a foundation over top. There are less color selections for CC and BB creams.

CC creams and BB creams: What to look out for and how to use them?

When choosing a BB cream, look for products containing glycerin, Niacinamide, and an SPF of 15, minimum. Glycerin pulls moisture into the skin, Niacinamide helps slough off dead skin cells so the complexion looks fresh and bright, and the SPF protects the skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

When looking for a CC cream, choose one with Niacinamide and vitamins B and E to boost skin health and restore radiance.

Niacinamide reduces the appearance of wrinkles while the vitamins strengthen the skin’s natural protective barrier. Look for an added SPF to protect the skin from sun damage.

How to Use a BB or CC cream

Apply it to your fingertips and blend into the skin with your fingers or a makeup sponge. It doesn’t get easier than this! Wear them alone or under your usual foundation for beautiful skin.

The Causes of Uneven Skin Tone

A common cause of uneven skin tone is the skin’s overproduction of a pigment called melanin, in response to excessive sun exposure. The skin darkens as a way of protecting itself, but too much exposure to the sun and this can cause burns and sun damage.

But it’s not just the sun that can cause uneven skin tone. Injury to the skin, acne, hormonal changes, thyroid problems and some medications can cause pigmentation of the skin.

What does uneven skin tone look like?

You will most likely see dark patches on the skin and it might look blotchy. Dark spots can appear on the face or hands. But uneven skin tone is not just dark skin. A condition called hypopigmentation can occur because of too few pigments in the skin, and this causes white spots and patches to develop.

Home Remedies for Uneven Skin Tone

Once the skin tone becomes uneven, it is possible to improve its appearance again, even with some remedies that you probably already have at home.

This protects the skin from the sun’s harmful rays and prevents any further pigmentation from happening. It will also reduce the appearance of existing dark patches or spots.

Dermatologists agree that wearing a sunscreen is essential for treating hyperpigmentation. You should opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF. Experts also recommend reducing your skin’s exposure to the sun by wearing long-sleeves, long trousers and a wide-brimmed hat. Research has shown that even one day of excessive sun exposure can undo any good work you’re doing to improve your skin tone, so cover up!

Turmeric

Turmeric has long been used for medicinal purposes and it also has skin-lightening properties which can help to reverse excessive pigmentation of the skin. Studies into how turmeric can treat uneven skin tone have shown that it’s effective at lightening the skin and that curcumin, one of its main compounds, inhibits the production of melanin in the skin.

You can make a paste from turmeric to reduce the appearance of pigmentation in the skin. Mix a teaspoon of turmeric, raw organic honey, and natural yogurt together in a bowl. Make a thick paste and apply it to the affected skin. As turmeric can stain, wear old clothing or wrap a towel around you when you’re doing this. Leave it on the skin for 20 minutes, rinse with cool water then pat your face dry. Repeat the treatment every few days.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is very effective at reducing the appearance of uneven skin tone and it can help to lighten the skin. The lightening effect comes from the citric acid that the lemon juice contains. Lemon juice is also rich in vitamin C which is great for skin health overall. Research on skin whitening agents has found lemon juice to be an ingredient in some skin lightening formulas. Be aware that lemon juice can make the skin feel dry, so always use a moisturizer afterward. Try this:

Dip a cotton wool ball in some lemon juice. Apply it to dark patches of skin for 10-15 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water and follow with a moisturizer. Repeat this twice per day until you see results.

To improve facial skin tone, you can make a mask by mixing a teaspoon of lemon juice, natural yogurt, and honey. Apply to your skin and leave it on for around 20 minutes. Rinse it off with warm water and use it daily until you see an improvement.

You can boost skin health from the inside too by drinking water with lemons in every day to help flush toxins out of your body. Your skin will thank you!

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) contains a high amount of a compound called acetic acid that can help to lighten dark patches of skin. Washing your face with the vinegar can help to improve skin tone and reduce the appearance of aging and acne.

It’s good for skin generally, in that it can help to prevent and kill of skin infections, and studies also found that acetic acid can improve the texture of the skin, reduce melanin production, and treat pigmentation.

Dilute the vinegar with water then apply it to the affected areas of skin with a cotton wool ball and leave it for 5 minutes. Rinse it off with warm water then gently pat the skin dry. Apply moisturizer as the vinegar can be drying for the skin. As you get used to using the vinegar, you can leave it on for longer, but just use it for short periods initially, as it can cause an adverse reaction.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a very effective remedy for helping to balance uneven skin tone. It’s great for the skin generally and is often used to treat sunburn, rashes, and irritation. It can also reduce the appearance of scars. A study looked at Aloe Vera’s ability to lighten dark patches of skin and it found that compounds in Aloe Vera could lighten the skin by reducing melanin production. Aloe Vera gel can be applied topically to the skin to approve its tone and texture. Massage some gel into the areas where you have uneven skin tone 2-3 times per day and you should notice results after a short while.

Mulberry Extract

The mulberry extract can be used as a natural skin lightening agent and it can improve the appearance of uneven skin tone. Mulberry contains compounds that block the production of melanin and it can help to lighten darker patches of skin. The research found that mulberry extract can inhibit melanin production and that its use as an effective skin lightening agent looks promising. Look for skincare products that contain mulberry extract and give them a try.

Soy Milk

Products that contain soy milk can help to reduce pigmentation of the skin, according to research. A dermatology journal found that soybeans contain compounds that block the skin’s production of melanin, and one clinical trial found that using a soy-based moisturizer helped to improve skin tone and reduce pigmentation over a 10-week period.

Milk and Yogurt

Milk and yogurt products can be used to improve the skin tone and reduce the appearance of dark patches of skin. Milk contains lactic acid which is good for skin health and gives it a more radiant and healthy appearance. One study found that products containing lactic acid could lighten the skin. It’s also effective against the bacteria that cause acne. Further studies have shown that lactic acid and glycolic acid in milk can help to reduce skin pigmentation.

Try making a milk powder paste by mixing a teaspoon of milk powder. Apply this to the face and leave it on for 20 minutes, rinse with warm water and pat the skin dry. Repeat this 4 times per week if possible to improve skin tone.

You can also use natural yogurt on its own to reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone and dark patches of skin. Mix a tablespoon of plain yogurt with some water. Apply this all over your face and allow it to dry. Rinse it off with warm water and pat the skin dry.

Black Tea

Black Tea

Black tea can reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone. It’s a natural skin cleanser and antioxidant which boosts the health of the skin. Research has found that black tea has a lightening effect on the skin as it blocked the production of melanin. It must be noted that this was not a human trial, it was carried out on guinea pigs, however, guinea pigs have similar skin to us, so they react in a similar way to whatever is applied on their skin. Try this: dip a black tea bag in hot water and leave it for a few minutes. Take the tea bag out of the water and let it cool, then apply to the affected areas of skin for a few minutes. Let the tea dry on your skin, then rinse it off with warm water. Repeat this twice per day to improve your skin tone.

Vitamin C

Products containing Vitamin C have been proven to help even out the skin tone. A study into how vitamin C benefits the skin found that it can combat free radicals which can damage the skin and affect its appearance. The study also said that vitamin C should be combined with vitamin E for best results.

Rosehip Extract

Studies have found that rosehips contain compounds that can help to reduce pigmentation of the skin, and that is effective if taken orally and applied topically. Another study found that rosehip inhibits the chemical that stimulates the production of melanin, so it can be used as a skin lightening agent.

Liquorice Cream

Skin creams that contain licorice can help to lighten the skin and reduce pigmentation. Liquorice is also an effective home remedy for skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. A dermatological journal found that licorice extracts inhibit the production of melanin and reduce pigmentation of the skin. Studies have shown that a cream with 20% licorice extract can reduce the appearance of pigmentation within 4 weeks.
