(Last Updated On: August 3, 2018)

Now, why would anyone in their right mind pour coconut oil in their hair? You wouldn’t be the first one to ask this question. Apparently, coconut oil is one of the best home remedies available you can use to maintain a beautiful head of locks.  I conjure up images of tropical island survivors planted on a small tropical island with a tall tree of coconuts towering over their heads. This is my perception of coconut oil. But this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Benefits of Using Coconut Oil in Your Hair

Coconut oil is a natural hair care product and it’s rich in antioxidants. It also has antiviral, anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. It will improve your scalp health, fight fungus and infections while adding volume and shine without using harmful chemicals in your hair. If you look at many of the ingredients in your hair care products you will find coconut oil listed among them. Coconut oil may replace many hair products in your cabinet and it’s safe and affordable to use.

Let’s start off by saying that coconut oil in recent years has become quite popular and successful in bringing marvelous results to people who have used it to condition their hair with. Supposedly, it leaves quite a shiny sheen in your hair. It makes your hair shine so bright you can use your hair as a mirror to look into. Maybe you can’t but other people can. Imagine coconut oil making your hair so bright people and look into it and to brush their teeth or comb their hair.

Coconut Oil the Deep Conditioner

Yes, it’s true that coconut oil can be used as a natural conditioner for hair. Coconut oil is mainly made of  smaller, medium-chain fatty acids which allows the oil to penetrate faster and deeper into the hair than most conditioners. To use coconut oil as a leave-in treatment to make your hair shine, moisturize your scalp and to heal split ends follow these directions: You will  need 1 or 2 hours for this treatment. The longer you are able to leave the coconut oil in your hair the more effective it will be. Start off by washing your hair and letting it dry. While your hair is drying you can prepare the other steps. Get your materials like a comb or hair pick. You will need a shower cap or a small towel to wrap your hair in.

Next get 2 small-sized bowls (one that can fit into a larger one.) of different sizes and of course  a jar pure virgin coconut oil. Pour some coconut oil into the smaller bowl. Set that smaller bowl into the larger one. Fill the larger bowl with hot water so the smaller bowl is partially submerged but not floating or taking in water. Once the coconut oil has reached temperature and melted. Place your fingers in the oil and massage it gently into your hair.

Use your hair comb or hair pick to work the coconut oil through the rest of your hair. Now, that you have put the oil through your hair; wrap it in a shower cap or small towel. Let your hair dry for 30 minutes or longer. Shampoo your hair to remove the oil and if you want to reapply a small amount to the hair tips do so. Or work a small amount of oil all through your hair for a nicer shine. Then style it as you normally would.

Detangle Those Tangles with Coconut Oil

You know if you have curly hair that tangles can be a daily hassle. So, coconut oil can help here too. This coconut oil is 100% natural, pure virgin oil allowing you to use it in your hair. It will not leave any residue or any long term damage to your locks. Don’t brush or style your hair yet, we are going detangle it. Following the conditioning steps above (Deep conditioner steps)  get your comb or hair pick. Get two different sized bowls. Set the smaller one inside the larger one. Pour some coconut oil into the smaller bowl and fill the larger bowl with water. Again, the smaller bowl is partially submerged but not floating or filling with any water.

The coconut oil needs to come to temperature by melting. Use your fingers to gently massage the oil into the ends of your hair. Get your comb or hair pick and work the oil into the hair starting at the ends and finished at the roots. While doing this you will be working the tangles out of your hair. Brush or comb your hair. You don’t have to shampoo it because by leaving the oil in your hair it will nourish it all day long.

Yes, you can even use coconut oil as a base for hair coloring. Coconut oil is a great medium for mixing all-natural hair coloring. Coconut oil penetrates the hair deeper than most other natural oils. You will need coloring herbs and gloves and the two different sized bowls. Get a container for mixing colors and a jar of organic coconut oil. Place the smaller bowl into the larger bowl and fill the larger bowl with water. Liberally put some coconut oil into the smaller bowl (Enough to coat your hair with). Set the smaller bowl into the larger bowl and fill it with hot water. Place the small bowl into the larger bowl so it is submerged but not floating or collecting water.

Melt the coconut oil and mix it in with your coloring herbs and apply it to your hair in the usual way. The color has set, so go ahead and shampoo your hair with lukewarm water to remove excess oil and colorant. Wrap your hair in a shower cap or towel and let the color set in your hair overnight.

Another reason why coconut oil stimulates hair growth is when you massage the scalp with coconut oil it helps to improve blood circulation.Oxygen and other necessary nutrients are carried through to the hair to ensure its growth. Coconut oil also contains lauric acid, capric acid and other fatty acids that bind proteins in the hair which strengthens the roots and strands preventing them from breaking.

Coconut Oil your Natural Hair Sunscreen

Here’s how: Get the usual hair pick, comb or brush. Two different sized bowls (one needs to fit into the larger bowl.) Fill the larger bowl with water and submerge the smaller bowl into the larger bowl. The smaller bowl shouldn’t be floating or taking in water. Melt the coconut oil and massage the coconut oil into your hair.

Styling with Coconut Oil

Did you know that coconut oil works great as a hair styling agent. It goes without saying that using curling irons, flat dryers, hair dryers and flat irons will zing the moisture right out the hair. It will get dry and brittle and start tangling. Coconut oil moisturizes the hair reversing the thermal damage caused by these tools when it is used in proper amounts for hair length and texture. It will tame flyaways, frizz and many more hair conditions.

People with thick, curly hair constantly fight frizzies in humid weather. Dab on some coconut oil and it will penetrate right into the frizzies. Put some in your hair throughout the day to keep it under control. First, measure out from ¼ to 1 teaspoon of coconut oil. The amount depends on the hair. Now, warm the coconut oil in your palms. Work the oil from the tips into the roots of your hair. Blow dry your hair ; it will take a little longer to dry your hair. The result will be smooth and manageable hair. You may also disguise and nourish split ends by touching the ends up with a little bit of coconut oil.

Beware Lice

This may seem like a bizarre use for coconut oil but it works. If you ever have had the misfortune of having lice in your hair, coconut oil will kill them. Coconut oil can also be used as a strong deterrent to keep lice out of your hair. If lice do show up in your hair, follow these steps to remove them: Mix 3 tablespoons of coconut oil with one tablespoon of each ylang ylang (yes that is ylang ylang!), anise and tea tree oils. Double the recipe for longer hair but this should do the trick for shoulder length hair.

Apply the solution to the scalp and massage it all through the hair pulling it through the ends. Comb through the hair with a fine toothcomb and put a shower cap on. Leave the cap on for two hours. If you can sit in the sun or use a hair dryer to warm up the cap during the two hours. Remove the cap carefully and seal it in a ziploc bag for disposal. After the two hours, comb your hair through before you wash and rinse it thoroughly twice.

While the hair is still wet combine two cups of apple cider vinegar with one cup of water in a small spray bottle. Spray liberally into the scalp and hair using half the bottle. Next, lean over the sink and gently massage the rest of the solution into the hair. Rinse the hair thoroughly and comb it with a fine toothcomb. Follow this with a light application of coconut oil and either cover the hair with a shower cap or style it as desired. Allow the coconut oil to stay in the hair until the next washing.

As with most lice treatments this process must be repeated every 5 to 10 days for a couple of weeks. This may sound like a very cumbersome process but it must be done. You must be sure to kill all the lice and make sure their eggs are removed. In between treatments comb your hair with a fine toothcomb morning and night. Please be sure to leave coconut oil as a “leave in” conditioner. Coconut oil will both repel and kill lice. At the first sign of a lice breakout use coconut oil as a “leave in” conditioner right away.
