What do you mean all the harmful effects of coffee? How can something that looks so nice and goes down so smoothly be harmful? Over 2.25 billion of coffee are consumed everyday in the world. 83% of adults in the United States drink coffee that is almost the whole adult population of the United States. How can all the se people be wrong about drinking coffee? Add a couple tons of sugar to the cup of coffee and you are ready to go. The caffeine in the coffee can give a person a buzz how can this be harmful. Coffee tastes so swell how can it hurt you? There are coffee stops all over the United States it’s so healthy for you. Coffee is a legal drug this must mean it’s ok to drink. You would think coffee is alright to drink because so many people in the world drink it. Coffee is so addictive should this be a warning to anyone who gets hooked on it? Can anything that is so hard to stop consuming be healthy? It really makes you wonder doesn’t it?
Personally, this writer gave up coffee years ago because it made him edgy, angry and too quick tempered. The caffeine just didn’t jive well with his system. As a young Air Force reservist his blood pressure skyrocketed at age 26. This is alarming to have high blood pressure at 26. What was the source of the high blood pressure? It was the overdose of caffeine consumption; it was the fact that he drank so much coffee everyday his nerves literally began to twitch on the inside. He was drinking 14 cups a coffee everyday in college this cannot be healthy. There was another friend of his writer who absolutely would be in a bad mood until he had his morning coffee. Are these healthy effects of drinking coffee? I don’t think so! Let’s investigate further about the harmful effects of coffee.

There was a partner study done at the world famous Mayo Clinic citing that men who drank more than 4 32 fluid oz. of coffee a day had a 21% increased risk of early death caused by all reasons that death may happen. But let’s qualify this statement with these men smoked and were in poor health. Also, Dr. Nancy Snyderman of NBC, said the study had some holes in it but she still cautioned drinking coffee in moderation. On the other hand if the study’s conclusions were accurate this is a serious risk to think about the next time we take a sip of coffee. It just isn’t worth taking the risk.
Caffeine Consumption Could Elevate the Blood Pressure
This is especially true in those who already suffer from hypertension and those who have never consumed caffeine. Two studies conducted had similar findings. The first study gave their patients, with hypertension, 250 mg of caffeine (equivalent of two cups of coffee) and found that the their blood pressure was elevated for 2 to 3 hours afterward. Mayo clinic conducted the second study and they found similar results with 180 mg of caffeine. The participants all were profoundly affected by the caffeine because they experienced an elevated blood pressure. It really impacted people who never consumed caffeine before.
Increased Heart Attack Risk for Young Adults
Another study done by Dr. Lucio Mos found that young adults with mild hypertension who drank 4 cups of coffee had 4 times the risk of a heart attack. More moderate consumption resulted in 3 times the risk for a heart attack. Young people who have their life ahead of them may be at risk for a heart attack which could paralyze them for life. If the heart attack is massive enough it could take their young and promising lives. Is coffee consumption worth the risk young people?
Gouts Here We Go
People who consume caffeinated drinks in excess-including coffee-are at a higher risk for developing a gout flare-up. ( Also called “gouty arthritis,” gout is a painful form of arthritis caused by too much uric acid in the body. The painful flare-ups may be concentrated in the big toe (a symptom known as podagra, as well as swelling and pain in the ankles, knees, feet, wrists or elbows.) As the above definition describes gout can be found in the big toe and will be a form of arthritis which can be very harmful. It also manifests in painful swelling of the ankles, knees, feet, wrists or elbows. Again, a pretty harmful side effect of coffee drinking.
Breast Tissues Damaged
A study found that women who drink 31-250 mg of coffee a day have a 1.5 times increased of formulating fibrocystic breast disease. (is a condition that affects the breast tissue in 30-60% of women and 50% in women of childbearing age) And women who consumed over 500 mg/day had a 2.3-fold increase in the odds of developing cysts. Another painful reminder that coffee isn’t healthy to drink in excess it could be harmful even drinking it in moderation.
Coffee Could Be Equal Incontinence
A study out of the University of Alabama concluded that women who consume tons of coffee are 70% more likely to develop incontinence. (may be defined as lack of self-restraint, lack of voluntary control over urination or defecation) which can become very dangerous and uncomfortable. Toxins can leak into the bloodstream and cause all kinds of issues for the body.
Another Sleepless Night
Coffee in a person’s bloodstream at bedtime can mimic symptoms of insomnia. Imagine you have to go to work and that means you have to get up a 6:00 a.m. the next morning. It’s midnight and you are wide awake because you drank too much coffee and you can’t sleep. 6:00 a.m. comes very quickly and you just shot your sleeptime. Is it worth consuming all that coffee when you will most likely have an ineffective day at work the next day because you can’t stay awake?
Oh No Indigestion
Oh no I feel sick to my stomach. I shouldn’t have drank that coffee on an empty stomach. People who drink caffeinated drinks often report stomach indigestion because they often drink the liquids on an empty stomach. If coffee (which is obviously included in caffeinated drinks) can upset our stomachs were we designed to consume excessive amounts of coffee.
Coffee Can Cause Headaches
Ironically, small amounts of caffeine can reduce headache symptoms. But you drink excessive amounts of coffee you may develop headaches that could lead to head pounding migraines. If you suffer from migraines naturally is it worth compounding those migraines by drinking too much coffee.
Coffee Could Cause Fertility Problems in Women
This study sheds light on some serious fertility issues for women. A study conducted by the University of Nevada School of Medicine, revealed that women who drink coffee can reduce their chances of becoming pregnant by 27% that is much too high of a risk to take to continue to drink coffee. Is reducing the chance of having a baby worth a few extra cups of coffee.
A Very Harmful Effect the Increased Risk of a Miscarriage
This deadly risk is intimately connected with the risk of reducing the chance of a woman becoming pregnant. This risk could cost a life of an unborn baby. Men and women who consumed at least two caffeinated drinks (including coffee) weeks before conception slightly increased the risk of a miscarriage occurring during the pregnancy. Yes, the risk is slightly higher of having a miscarriage but the reality is still present. The reality is still there that the risk of miscarriage is slightly elevated. Over a few cups of coffee?
Type 2 Diabetics could be at Risk
A study engineered by the American Diabetes Association found that type 2 diabetics could be at risk from drinking too much coffee. The study concluded coffee impaired glucose metabolism in type 2 diabetics. Again, this could potentially be a life-threatening risk for type 2 diabetics.
Did you know that you can overdose on coffee? It may sound hilarious but it is true. The case of a caffeine overdose is extremely rare but if it does happen it will lead to all kinds of health problems up to and including death. People who have a low tolerance for caffeine would be more at risk for an overdose.

Some people are very sensitive to the caffeine molecule to the point they can break out in allergic-type reactions. They will experience hives and pain.affe It is a true allergy but it will bring them much discomfort and negative side effects if they consume even the smallest amount of caffeine. This would obviously include drinking a minimal amount of coffee.

A recent study showed that after energy drink consumption (coffee can be included) heart contractions became more forceful. Long -term health effects aren’t known at this time. But it could have negative repercussions for those with existing health issues. If a person were to drink a couple coffee pots of coffee they might as well enter their heart in the Grand Prix. Surely, forceful heart contractions aren’t worth having just to drink some coffee.

Up to this point we have been recording the harmful effects coffee consumption may have on the body. In some cases these side effects may be life-threatening potentially causing death. Yes coffee does taste nice when it is prepared and blended properly. In no time a person can become addicted to coffee because it will act like a drug on the system. There have been some serious effects we have discussed that excessive coffee drinking can have. It just isn’t worth the risk for a couple minutes of pleasure. A person could suffer a lifetime from drinking too much coffee for years. Let’s look at some more harmful effects of coffee drinking.

Recently, a study was published in journal of “The North American Menopause Society” showing that menopausal women who consumed coffee would experience a greater degree of vasomotor symptoms. (the medical term for “hot flashes” accompanied with transition into menopause and actually during menopause. They usually occur at night) Even here coffee can affect women and the harmful effects of coffee seem to be widespread across the health spectrum.
Anxious Over What
Another common effect of coffee consumption is that it can cause anxiety to the point of having panic attacks. This could lead to the need for anxiety medication and depression may set in. A well conducted study was done in 2003. The partnering research teams were the Department of Psychiatry, The University of Chicago and The Department of Psychiatry, University of Munster, Germany. This study investigated three different genotypes (the genetic constitution of an organism) of people involving the adenosine receptor genes to see which class of people would likely be more at risk for anxiety episodes from consuming caffeine (coffee is included). The study concluded that people carrying the, A2a receptor gene difference, were at a greater risk for developing anxiety attacks after drinking coffee, tea, energy drinks, or other caffeine-containing products. The A2a receptors found in the brain are believed to regulate how a person reacts to stress and anxiety. Caffeine (obviously found in coffee) attaches to these receptors and inhibits the regulation of anxiety. So, the person becomes anxious because the receptors are being blocked from regulating anxiety. These increased anxiety attacks may lead to outright panic attacks with depression coming just around the corner. Come on risking depression to enjoy a few cups of coffee!

Coffee Can Interfere with the Production of Collagen in the Skin
It is dosage-driven but the the more coffee you consume the worse the effects are. Collagen is a necessary protein found in the skin to that holds it together in structure and substance. So you slow down or prevent this protein production in the skin it will have negative effects. If collagen production stops the skin will become damaged, wrinkled, and to say the least speed up the aging process. Who wants these types of results?
Ossification is the laying down of new bone material by ells known as osteoblasts. In other words if you break a bone then these cells will go to work to restructure the bone. When bone is broken or dissolved somehow, these super bone cells kick in and restore bone material lost. Well, caffeine or coffee interferes with the ossification process which will naturally lead to brittle bones and fractures. The bones will weaken which could lead to osteoporosis. ( a condition which makes bones weak and brittle. Bone mass is also reduced.)
Sleep Deprivation is Sleep Deprivation
There is a false mindset out there that thinks consuming coffee after days of no sleep will stimulate the brain and the body. People think it will stimulate the thinking and make the body alert again. So, they jump behind the wheel of a car or they try and engage in some other focused required task. A study found that the advantage caffeine brought to stimulate the brain to function normally was lost after 3 days of sleep deprivation. Caffeine will not help with extended periods of sleep deprivation.
Hearing Loss Recovery Impairment
In a study involving guinea pigs it was found that caffeine slowed down the hearing loss recovery caused by excessive noise in the guinea pigs. They think this correlation may be found in humans. There is absolutely no scientific evidence to support this hypothesis.Much needed study must be conducted to prove this will happens with humans who are exposed to high levels of noise and consume coffee. This harmful effect is being mentioned here because the effect of it may be validated in future studies.

It has been stated that it’s harder to find the negative effects of coffee on the health as opposed to its positive effects. This may or may not be true but the harmful effects discussed here should be taken into consideration; by anyone who consumes coffee or is thinking about getting into the habit of consuming coffee.
